Research shows that many hair products used by Black women contain chemicals of concern, and often, they aren't even listed on the label.

A 2018 study by Silent Spring Institute tested 18 hair products commonly used by Black women, including relaxers, leave-in conditioners, hair lotions and root stimulators. It found parabens in 78% of the products and diethyl phthalate in 78% as well. Both have been linked in research to hormone disruption. Every product tested contained fragrance chemicals, and 84% of the chemicals detected weren't listed on the label.

A 2025 report by the Environmental Working Group reviewed more than 4,000 personal care products marketed to Black women and found that only 21% were rated low hazard.
